AGFC Gas Lease news
LITTLE ROCK - With the stroke of a pen, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission today unanimously agreed to gas leases on two of its wildlife management areas. The leases will generate about $29.5 million for the agency. The lease agreements were signed during a special meeting of the AGFC at its headquarters in Little Rock.

2008 - 2009 Hunting Season
LITTLE ROCK – Arkansas hunters can begin planning their vacations now that commissioners from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission have formally approved the upcoming season dates. In a 4-2 vote, commissioners passed the seasons for modern gun, archery and muzzleloader deer seasons.
The proposals include calendar adjustments, new codes, code revisions and code clarifications.
2006 - 2007 Deer Harvest
How good was the Arkansas deer harvest last season? Well, if you killed one or two, you’re probably among those who thought it was great. If you didn’t, it probably didn’t measure up to your standards.
For the record there were 165,663 deer killed in the state last season, a 25 percent increase over 2005-06’s 132,415. Compare that to 1977 — only 30 years ago — when a total of 27,790 deer were checked.
Northwest Arkansas Times’ Bobby Hill breaks down the numbers pretty well, albeit with an emphasis on the Northwest corner of the state. But Joe Mosby’s story on the same numbers suggest some hunters still grumble. Disgruntled deer hunters, now there’s a shock.
If you want to examine the stats yourself, you can find ‘em right here. (Fair warning though: It’s a “.pdf” file and is SLOW to load on even a high-speed connection.)
One more statistic worth noting is that Clark County had the third-highest harvest (5,795 deer), behind only Union (7,363) and Dallas (5,907) counties.
Jim Fairbanks, a good friend, has passed
Jim Fairbanks, 61, of Hot Springs, passed away on Jan. 17 after a long battle with cancer.
If you knew Jim, you know what kind of guy he was — smiling, optimistic and willing to help anybody with most any task. He had hunted on this lease for some 30-odd years and loved it. A focused hunter, he scouted hard, hunted hard and helped those around him be better hunters.
Jim Fairbanks will be missed, but not forgotten.
